Wu Yibing becomes first Chinese man to reach the US Open third round since 1881

Wu Yibing became the first Chinese man to reach the US Open third round since 1881 when he qualified through qualifying and beat Michael Russell 6-2, 6-3 in the third round.

With this victory, Wu added to his collection of top 50 wins to date with an opening round victory against the second seed in the US Open.

The victory puts Wu, who has reached the third round in 12 of his past 14 live tournament appearances, in position to qualify for the main draw.

His win over the second seed in the third round of the US Open also sees Wu reach a career-high ranking of No. 27 in the world, as he now holds a five-stroke lead over compatriot Li Chao.

The 36-year-old Wang Zhiqing, who had been in the third and fourth rounds of the tournament, played to a 6-7 (5), 6-4, 7-6(5) defeat against Bradley Karpin in the third round.

At the time of writing, Wu has a 1-5 win-loss record over Karpin, while the Swiss was 2-0.

Also reaching the third round of the US Open is top seed Marcel Granollers, who advanced to his first third round of the US Open by defeating the top seed Richard Gasquet in the first round.

After winning his opening match in the top 100, Wu became the first Chinese man since Guo Zhendong in 2004 to reach the US Open third round.

Granollers will next play Australian Bernard Tomic in the fourth round.

Also advancing through qualifying is the top seed Andy Murray in the second round, after beating No. 16 Karen Khachanov 6-1, 6-2, 6-4 in the first round.
