The shooting happened at a school in the PPG area of Pittsburgh Monday afternoon, and now the people of the city have an even bigger trauma on their hands: Six-year-old Madison Lewis was shot and killed by two of her classmates as she walked to school with her mother.
It’s a horrific situation, and the whole town has a lot of questions. What exactly went wrong? Who did this? And where is Pittsburgh getting its police officers?

That’s a difficult question to answer, but one that’s worth discussing.
As the story that unfolded on Monday unfolded, many were asking, “Where was Pittsburgh’s police chief when this all went down?”
The police chief was Pittsburgh police chief William Dougherty, and I reached out to him right away to get his take on all this.
“What can we really say at this point?” he said in an email. “Our officers are looking into the scene, as are the FBI and the prosecutor’s office, and all the proper professionals are looking into the scene, along with the families of the two young people.
